ZigZagZurich: Where Art is Woven Into the Textiles
It takes a community to create beautiful things and the artisans who make up the team at this Zurich-based atelier have been creating the prettiest textiles for nearly twenty years
“We like taking risks; we believe in breaking the mold” is the bold statement that has long set ZigZagZurich apart from other purveyors of fine household textiles for the bedroom, bath, and kitchen.
Founded in 2013 and headquartered along Breitensteinstrasse in Zurich (Switzerland), the company was founded by artisans who have been in the industry for a quarter of a century and a passion for truly creative and innovative endeavors that help set their products a cut above the competition in terms of style, quality, and craftsmanship.
A Serendipitous Beginning
The creation of ZigZagZurich stems from the time when its founders were asked to create bespoke textile concepts for several art installations as well as a number of international luxury projects. While working on the ideas of others, they hit upon the notion of bringing artistry to everyday textiles – and the business was born.
Today, ZigZagZurich is a proud member of the global creative community operating out of Switzerland and has brought in a number of artists to produce linens that are not just useful for a variety of purposes, but are also considered works of functional art.
Indeed, it is a brand that offers Warhol-inspired beach towels sporting a PopArt ice cream cone in bold primary colors; linens emblazoned with reproductions of Cubist works by Picasso and Miro; plush bedding featuring the work of abstract modernists like ChristofferJoergenssen and the creative tandem of Sophie Probst and Michele Rondelli; and even carpets that do double-duty as either cozy floor coverings or thought-provoking objets d’art you can hang on a wall.
Also, ZigZagZurich beach towels are very much on trend in Switzerland these days, and you can see these trendy textiles spread on the lawns near popular swimming venues like the local badi [public pool] or areas near the River Aare in Bern where city folk dive right in at the height of summer. (For that, be sure to check out our blog post on river swimming!)
Socially Responsible Production
But ZigZagZurich is more than its artistry and the exceptional Swiss quality of its end-products. Indeed, the company prides itself on its ethical approach to manufacturing and its emphasis on using sustainable methods by which to get its raw materials.
Many of its products are made with European linen and Egyptian cotton grown in Italy and the thread spun from these is woven into a number of styles to suit different product types. Likewise, its knitted products which range from throws and blankets to scarves and hats are made with sustainably-sourced wool from New Zealand sheep and alpacas.
The wools are processed in smaller, more sustainably-operated mills and are dyed in a variety of vibrant colors. Each piece, regardless of whether it’s a towel, a blanket, or even a carpet is meticulously finished by in-house artisans with incredible attention and patience.
Indeed, we would not be going too far when we say that each ZigZagZurich we have is more than just another linen for the home: it’s an artistic piece and an experience waiting to be enjoyed. Proudly designed in Switzerland!
